Notes and Abbreviations

This pattern assumes the reader has knowledge of the long-tail cast on, knitting in the round, decreasing in the round, the knit stitch, and the purl stitch. If you prefer a tighter fitting brim, or a tighter fitting beanie overall, you may size down to US 13 (9 mm) needles when knitting the pattern. For the smaller beanie sizes, you may find that double pointed needles (DPNS) are a better option for the beanie – if this is the case, simply divide the stitches evenly over the needles and knit as directed.

I used a single-ply merino wool for the original beanie, but I’ve also used super bulky yarn available at most craft stores with success as well. One of my test knitters used worsted weight (weight category 4) yarn held double for this pattern and it worked out great! You have many yarn options for this pattern, but no matter which you choose, be sure to check your gauge before you start!

Special thanks to Olga of @whataboutbaby for her help with the baby/toddler sizing of the pattern!

Finishing
Snip yarn from skein, leaving a long tail. Thread working yarn through tapestry needle. Weave yarn through stitches on needles, and cinch yarn to close hat. Weave in any ends on wrong side of piece. Block lightly if desired.

At this time, you can make a pom-pom and attach it to the beanie if you wish!
